My 20 Favourite Contemporary Worship Songs

I thought that I would share some of my favourite contemporary worship songs. I will share 20 of my favourite contemporary songs, but these songs will not be hymns. They are in no specific order.

1. Praise You In This Storm. This song is by Casting Crowns. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because I feel it represents my life right now. It is still “raining”, just like the song says. But the songs also says “every year you’ve cried. You hold in your hand. You never left my side.” Even though it still feels like it’s raining God hasn’t left me (or you.) Deuteronomy 31:8 says “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” No matter what God will be praised in the good times and in the bad.

2. Blessings. This song is by Laura Story. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. This is a song I’ve played on the piano for a long time, but it wasn’t until about 7 months ago that I actually looked at the words when I was playing. The words that struck me were “What if trials of this life are your mercies in disguise?” That was the line that made me love the song. It was a new way of looking at what I was going through, and also a new way of looking at life in general. Blessings can also come not in the way we expect, like as the songs says “through rain drops.” The song ends with saying “What if trials of this life, the rain, the storms, the hardest nights are your mercies in disguise.”

3. Come As You Are. This song is by David Crowder. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. This song reminds me a lot of the story of the Prodigal Son. I like this song because it reminds you that if you are sad, broken hearted, if you have burdens, shame, brokenness, hurt, you feel hopeless, you’ve strayed, you feel weary or if you’ve wandered, it doesn’t matter, because you can come as you are, and you will be healed.

4. Whom Shall I Fear. This song is by Chris Tomlin. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because it reminds us that we don’t have anyone to fear, we know who goes before us, we know who stands behind us and we know who stands beside us. It also reminds us that He reigns forever and that He is our friend.

5. The Proof of Your Love. This song is by King and Country. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I first came across this song about a year ago, when I was playing in one of my piano books and the words just struck me. If someone was to ask me what my favourite Christian song in general would be, it would be this one. I like the song because the words in the verses are so true. There is so much to take out of those two verses. The chorus gives us a challenge on how to live our life to be a light to others.

6. Because He Lives (Amen). This song is by Matt Maher. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because the first verse is proclaiming what we believe. It also talks about in the bridge that “because He lives I can face tomorrow.” (which I know comes from the hymn Because He Lives) I don’t think I would have gotten through this past year without Him. The bridge also reminds us that “He holds my life my future in His hands.” Sometimes we often forget about that and start to worry about the future, but this song reminds us that there isn’t a need for that.

7. Just Be Held. This song is by Casting Crowns. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because it says “your world’s not falling apart, it’s falling into place”. Lots of times when life doesn’t go how we want we think it’s the end, but this song reminds us that when life isn’t going how we want, life is going just as it should.  This song also says “in the storm is where you’ll find me.” I like this lyrics because in the storms of life we are if we search for God we will find Him.

8. God of This City. This song is by Chris Tomlin. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because the first sentence says “you’re the God of this city.” That can be true with whatever city you live in. I live in Regina, but whatever city you live in it’s true. In verse two it says that God is the light, hope and peace. In order for our city to see that, we need to be living that out so that people can see God’s light, hope and peace through us. In the chorus it tells us the greater things we still be happenjng in our city and if we keep our eyes open we will see the thing that are happening.

9. Healing is in Your Hands. This song is by Christy Nockels. If you would like to read you can click here. I like this song because no matter what kind of health issues you have,  this songs reminds us that healing is in God’s hands.

10. In Christ Alone. This song is by Staurt Townend. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because in verse one it talk about everything that God is. In verse two and three, it is tells us about his death and reurection, and in verse four it says that we don’t have any fear of death because we are standing with Christ. It also says that until He calls us home, we will stand in the power of Christ.

11. Who Am I. This song is by Casring Crowns. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because of what it mentioned in the video, it says “not because of who I am, but because of what you’ve done. Not because of what I’ve done, but because of who you are”. It’s not from anything we’ve done in our lives, it’s all because of who God is and what He’s done. Also, at the end of the song, it says we have nothing to fear because we belong to God.

12. Oceans (Where Feet May Fail). This song is by Hillsong. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because it can be related to our everyday life. We don’t know where God is calling us, but we have to step out in faith and keep our eyes on God. And like the song says “spirit lead me where my trust is without borders”, we will be lead sometimes to uncofortable places, which is what this song is saying, and that we just need to trust.

13. Same Power. This song is by Jeremy Camp. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because in the chorus it says “The same power that rose Jesus from the grave, the same power that commands the dead to wake, lives in us.” God’s power lives in us. Lots of times that isn’t really something that gets a lot of thought. The song ends with “he lives in us.” God lives in us and so does His power.

14. Mighty to Save. This song is by Hillsong. If you would like to read about the song you can click here. This was one of my favourite songs when I was younger. I like this song because in the chorus it talks about how “he can move the mountains and he rose and conquered the grave”. It also says that “He is might to save”, and He is going to save us.

15. This I Believe (The Creed). This song is by Hillsong. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because it proclaims what we believe.

16. Eye of the Storm. This song is by Ryan Stevenson. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because even in the very middle of a storm God remains in control just like what it says in the song. Just like the song says “My only hope is to trust in you”, and sometimes that’s all we can do during the storms of life.

17. God is on the Move. This song is by 7eventh Time Down. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here, and start watching the video at 15 min. I like this song because it can be a reminder that God is still on the move even with everything that is going on in the world today.

18. Forever (We Sing Hallelujah). This song is by Kari Jobe. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because it paints a picture of Jesus’s death and reurection. In the chorus it says “forever he is glorified, forever he is lifted high, forever he is risen, forever he is alive”. And the song ends with saying “you have overcome”.

19. You Will Never Run. This song is by Rend Collective. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because in the chorus it says “you will never run away”, and that can be taken on both sides. God will never leave us, and we can never run away from God no matter how much we try. Then in the verse it says “love wide as galaxies, love deeper than the sea”. No one has ever been to the ends of the galaxy and no one has been to the very bottom of the sea so it’s saying that we cant even comprehend all that God loves us which is an incredible thought if you actually think about it.

20. Even If. This song is by Mercy Me. If you would like the story behind the song you can click here. I like this song because in the chorus it says “I know your able and I know you can save through the fire with your mighty hand but even if you don’t my hope is you alone,” God sometimes chooses not to heal and even if he doesn’t heal we still have hope in God because we have seen what He is capable such as an example like this. If we read through the lyrics of the song, it is about someone saying that they are struggling right now, but as we go along we see that things are getting better for them because the very last lines of the song say “it is well with my soul it is well, it is well with my soul”.
